Science Communication

Position Title

Chief Science Communication Officer

Position Description: The Chief Science Communication Officer oversees the activities and progress of all teams within the Science Communication Pillar, including the STEM Fellowship Journal, Scholarly Viewpoint Challenge, Blog, and Workshops, ensuring the timely execution of initiatives with high-quality standards. They lead weekly meetings with team leads to track progress, provide support, and align strategies, while also attending weekly Steering Committee meetings to share updates and contribute to organizational planning. The Chief maintains a high level of responsiveness by replying to all communications within 24 hours, including those with team members, volunteers, and external partners. They regularly evaluate the effectiveness of programs under the pillar, recommend improvements based on feedback and best practices, and ensure the smooth execution of timelines, deliverables, and quality control for all initiatives. Managing the budget, including applying for grants when necessary, is also a key responsibility of this role. Through these efforts, the Chief ensures the Science Communication Pillar fulfills its mandate and advances STEM Fellowship’s broader mission.

Time Commitment:6-8 hours/week

Additional Qualifications: Applicants must be graduate students or upper-year undergraduate students (3rd or 4th year) with proficiency in English. A strong background in scientific writing is highly preferred.

Position Title

Marketing Specialist

Position Description: Marketing specialists will be responsible for developing and implementing marketing strategies aimed at increasing the visibility of STEM Fellowship’s programs and initiatives. Working closely with all committees, the social media team, and the Steering Committee, you’ll help ensure STEM Fellowship’s marketing aligns with its mission and resonates with our diverse stakeholders. This position includes creating content for social media, email campaigns, and various digital platforms, all with the objective of promoting STEM education.

Time Commitment: 4-6 hours/week

Additional Qualifications: Applicants should be current students pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies in marketing, communications, or related fields. Ideal candidates will have a strong interest in STEM education or nonprofit work, coupled with excellent communication and organizational skills. Familiarity with marketing tools and platforms such as Google Analytics, Canva, and MailChimp is highly desirable.

Position Title

Social Media Coordinator

Position Description: The Social Media Coordinator will be responsible for the hands-on management and operation of STEM Fellowship social media accounts. Responsibilities include designing social media posts and other marketing materials using Canva. Team members should be able to create engaging, original, and theme-based material. Members should also have a general understanding of how social media platforms work, including how to make posts and follow trends. They will also be monitoring social media channels, analyzing performance metrics, and staying current on social media trends to optimize STEM Fellowship’s online presence.

Time Commitment: 3-5 hours/week

Additional Qualifications: Applicants should be current students pursuing studies in marketing, communications, or related fields. Ideal candidates will have a strong interest in STEM education or nonprofit work, coupled with excellent communication and organizational skills. Familiarity with marketing tools and platforms such as Canva is highly desirable.

Position Title

Chapter Head

Position Description: Chapter Heads are representatives of STEM Fellowship across Canadian and American high schools and are responsible for promoting STEM Fellowship’s mission within the events and programs they implement at their school, devising outreach strategies to reach new members as a way to educate their members about the role of scholarly communication, data science, and computational thinking in the progression of STEM. Chapter Heads must remain in active contact with the national team and attend weekly meetings with their regional lead who will provide mentorship, help troubleshoot issues, and assist with brainstorming event ideas to nurture the growth and success of their chapter. They must maintain active communication with STEM Fellowship through google chat and email. Candidates must have strong communication and collaboration skills, as well as the ability to meet deadlines.

Time Commitment: 4-5 hours/week

Additional Qualifications: Applicants for this position must be attending a Canadian secondary school and be proficient in English.

Grassroots

Position Title

High School Chapters Regional

Position Description: The High School Chapters Liaison will be responsible for assisting new high schools in establishing their own STEM Fellowship Chapters. This role involves reaching out to various high schools via email to inform them about the STEM Fellowship and collaborating with them to address the details of starting a chapter. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to promptly respond to emails and maintain records of outreach efforts using Google Sheets. Additionally, candidates are expected to attend weekly team meetings and collaborate with team members on key tasks.

Time Commitment: 2-4 hours/week

Additional Qualifications: Applicants for this position must be at least attending a Canadian secondary school and be proficient in English. Experience with communications or organizational outreach is preferred but not required.

Grassroots

Position Title

High School Chapters Regional Lead

Position Description: High School Chapters Regional Lead act as liaisons between Chapter Heads and the Grassroots Pillar. They are expected to achieve this by attending two meetings each week, one with their assigned Chapter Heads, and the other with the Grassroots Committee. During the meetings with Chapter Heads, Regional Leads are expected to provide mentorship and guidance by advising Chapter Heads how best to run their chapters and promote STEM Fellowship initiatives. Outside of the meetings, Regional Leads will assist the Grassroots committee with hosting their own initiatives as well as checking in on Chapter Heads. Candidates must have strong communication and collaboration skills, as well as the ability to meet deadlines.

Time Commitment: 4-5 hours/week

Additional Qualifications: Applicants for this position must be enrolled in or possess an undergraduate-level degree at a Canadian University and be proficient in English.
